Books and graphic novels I’m reading or have read since 2023. Just something fun to share :)
-
The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green
First of all, prefect book to read on a plane if you don’t mind crying in front of strangers. The seemingly silly subjects all turn meaningful.
-
The Subtle Art of Not Giving A Fuck by Mark Manson
This book feels like hanging out with your sarcastic friend who consistently makes you smile with their blunt opinions. Secretly enlightened book.
-
City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert
I did not realize books could be considered sexy but lo and behold Liz does it again. This book made me proud of my femineity and open my eyes to a world of wonder.
-
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
The closest thing to a living Buddha is here in the form of Eckhart Tolle. A direct introduction of being present since that is the only real thing that exists. I think about his work everyday.
-
The Way of Integrity by Martha Beck
Not the kind of integrity that insists that you don’t swear or show too much decolletage. Martha means kind of integrity where you stop lying to yourself to achieve self actualization.
-
The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
Be impeccable with your word. Don’t take things personally. Don’t make assumptions. Always do your best. Wonderful short read.
-
The Bridge Across Forever by Richard Bach
I reread this book every so often, and this spring I did again. Despite being a total romantic, I relate to Richard’s apprehension about soulmates. <3
-
What You Want Wants You by Suzanne Eder
I would read this book every time I went out into a nature reserve. There is something comforting and serene about it . Interesting thoughts about desire.
-
Where The Crawdads Sings by Delia Owens
I am admittedly very grumpy about this book only because every time I try to finish it I just get depressed and give up. How could you write something so sad Delia? I will get to it eventually!
-
The Failure of Nerve by Edwin H. Friedman
This book is kinda dry but very informative. It was lent to me by a friend who has now has insisted that this one is good for my brain. Will finish it eventually!
-
Nevermore by Kit & Kat
The series is still ongoing, but I’m caught up for the next season. This has become my new favorite graphic novel. It’s spooky, sapphic, and full of Edgar Ellen Poe references, what more could I dream for?
-
The Wrath & The Dawn by Renee Ahdieh and SilversterVitale
The art is so gorgeous and fantastical. It’s one of those stories that really transport you into a different realm. The protagonist is so clever and fun to root for. She’s kind of OP but I love whenever she’s talking.
-
Lore Olympus by Rachel Smythe
I love the modern take on this series and the unique art style. I feel like Rachel has taught me a lot about comic book making through example. The popularity of this comic makes people hate on it, but I truly still like it and enjoy the themes and different characters.
-
Muted by Miranda Mundt
Miranda, you don’t know me but some how managed to draw all of my favorite things. New Orleans, sapphic love, witches, and overcoming childhood trauma. Chef’s kiss.
-
About Death by Sini & Hyeono
Simple and stunning. This comic cut me so deep and had me ugly crying. The concepts are so great and the use of color is always so delicate. Love the line work and the story is incredible.
-
Death's Game by Lee Wonsik & GGULchan
This comic is very aggressive, but I still enjoyed it. The main character is awful, but that’s kind of the point. The reincarnations are unexpected, and the art is undeniably good. Kept me on the edge of my seat.
-
The House of Stars by Saltacuentos & Lion Illustration
This is like if a Studio Ghibli movie got condensed into a tiny webcomic. I think I felt the pacing of the comic was a bit rushed, but I think the focus on this is the beauty of the art rather than a complicated story arc.
-
Cursed Princess Club by LambCat
Listen, listen. I know what you’re thinking. This is a comic for babies. BUT I would argue that this comic deals with adult themes and trauma — therefore not for babies. Lambcat is hilarious in their writing. Kind of like how SpongeBob handles innuendos. Subtle but if you know you know.
-
My Deepest Secret by Hanza Art
Lots of great twists and turns for this mystery. I think the art improves a lot over the comic which is always exciting. The ending went to a place that I didn’t agree with, but still a great story. I was here for the journey, anyway.
-
Love Me to Death by Toonimation
I picked this one up because I loved the Dia de Los Muertos themes. This comic really took me by surprise by the choice of love interest — but the art is good and I’m open minded. ;)
